“Massela, permit me to enter.”

I call out to the healer and watch him with curiosity as he places his leather satchel on the floor next to the firepit. I’ve only been alone for less than five minutes, and I could’ve used more time to compose myself.

“The Masse has asked me to check on your injuries.”

I extend my wounded foot in his direction. “It doesn’t hurt anymore, but I did ruin the bandages in the water.”

After examining them, he waves a hand in dismissal. “The skin looks tender, but it is no longer open. I will put a salve on it regardless. And your wrists will need some also.”

“Are you a mated male?” I blurt out. When he freezes, I immediately regret my intrusive question. “I’m sorry. I just… Never mind.”

“I am not mated, but I hope to be someday. Give me your arm.”

“Why is it such a big deal? Well, other than not dying from a stone heart.” I blow out a breath and scrunch my face. “I just don’t get it.”

He rubs the salve into the chafed skin on my wrist, his touch light. The cooling sensation spreads, and as much as I enjoy it, I find myself liking the calm personality of the healer more. He puts me at ease, and even though we aren’t friends, I can almost imagine we are.

“From what you told me about your sister, I gather you have a special relationship. Is this correct?” When I nod, he continues. “Think of how it feels when you are around her, how her happiness or sadness affects you. Think of how you would do anything to ensure her safety and how important she is to you.”

“Okay.” That is easy to do. Scarlett is my other half.

“Good. Now magnify that.”

“And add a heavy sexual component,” I mutter.

A smile splits his lips. “That should help you understand.”

“But it’s not the same,” I argue. “She and I are family and of the same race. Hell, the same species. A Boraq with a human doesn’t make sense.”

“Are you saying that the earth and sky don’t go together just because they are different?”

“Oh.” Well, shit.

When he finishes with my wrists, I mention my shoulders. They didn’t bother me at first, but now that I’m dressed, the scrapes are being rubbed too often, making me uncomfortable.

“Show me where.”

I untie the laces and push down the material, revealing my back.

Brannick clicks his tongue. “He should know to be more delicate with you, despite however strong his desire is.”

I close my eyes, grateful he can’t see the look of mortification on my face. “It’s not his fault. I pulled away from him.”

“Because you were angry.”

He says this as a statement, so I respond in truth. “Yes.”

“Let me see the other scratches.”

I slide the material off my other shoulder, clutching the dress to my chest. Brannick lifts my hair and gently places it over my shoulder, keeping it away from the others now covered in a minty salve. He attends to my scrapes, and immediately the irritation from the skin lessens.
